The Heritage Center has worked hard
towards building the Settlement of the Prairie. The purpose of the
Settlement is to preserve an image of what life was like for the first
Ackley residents for future generations. Early additions include the
Limburg House, County School, Charlie's Windmill, and Native Prairie
Grasses. The most recent addition to the exhibit is a rebuilt
Prairie Barn.
The barn is home to an exhibit
depicting the history of agriculture in the area and the "Story of
Corn". Recent additions to the agriculture exhibit include an antique
buggy, potato sorter, plows, and many other items.
With help from the community, the
barn has become a tribute to the early pioneers; many of them from
Ostfriesland,
Germany who turned the prairie
sod into the family farm.
